Slightly cooler more innocent version of those walking machines posted earlier. These ones made by an artist who simply wants to create a new species of life to live on the beach :)

There was a really good website on this frenchman but it's been shut down so I'll keep looking, he spent much of his life in insane asylums and he wrote a whole lot, including books and plays and philosophy. Among such being the Theatre and the Plague, and the Theatre and it's Double.
